This week we read a poem called "A Papas Waltz". At first when I read the title I thought that this is a poem about a dance. I was kind of right. When you think of dance it is usually is a happy thing. But when I read the first line I realized that this was not a happy poem. The first line talked about the whiskey on the fathers breath which says that the fathers drunk. That is not very happy in my opinion. Once I read more I believed that this poem was about abuse. This is because it talked about the fathers hand caked with dirt and he was drunk so I believed he came home every night drunk fighting with the mom.
As we kept reading it over someone said they thought it was a happy tone. This was because the dad and son were dancing around the kitchen having fun. Then Mrs.Gunter brought up the point that it might not be a sad tone but it is not happy because using diction that includes death is not happy. I said that this was a serious tone. The poem is a serious tone because it shows the take a give of a father and son relationship.
In life there's always a give and take. Like in oranges he gave something sweet to get something sweet which was his childhood into adulthood. We have to give up things to get great things. Like in my life i had to give up hanging out with my friends on the weekends because of volleyball. Even though I was sad about it i earned something with that sacrifice. In a papas waltz the boy loves his dad unconditionally. Even though his dad is a drunk he does the dance with his father even though he doesn't like it because he loves him and wants to spend whatever time he can with him. This poem I think is also about sometimes we do anything for our loved ones. For example at least my parents tell me this they would take a bullet for me which shows that they love me.
In life whenever we don't have something we want it very badly. In this poem it shows that the father is a hard laborer that comes home drunk. The boy just wants to be with him no matter what it wouldn't matter if he was high the boy still wants to be with his dad because he never sees him. The mom is mad in this poem because the dad comes home drunk and the boy appreciates his dad more than his mom. This is because the mom takes care of the boy all day and gets no affection but then when the drunk dad comes home he gets all the attention and affection.
Overall I liked this poem a lot because it related to life (not a big surprise there). I was able to make a connection between doing anything for loved ones because I would too.
